A sun-splashed holiday season comes alive in the Florida Keys with seasonal offerings throughout the island chain. A sampling of upcoming events:
Festival of Trees
The Zonta Club of Marathon’s Festival of Trees is through Dec. 3 at Florida Keys Country Club on Sombrero Boulevard in Marathon.
Trees are festively decorated by members of the Zonta Club, a service club, and displayed at the country club. Visitors and residents can bid to purchase the decorated trees.
The Florida Keys Holiday Festival is set for 4 to 10 p.m. Dec. 2 at Founders Park, mile markrer 87 in Islamorada.
There will be a 30-ton mountain of snow and a ceremony to light a 35-foot-tall tree. There’s a parade with Santa Claus, food and drink, activity booths for kids and music by the Coral Shores High School Marching Band. Dogs and owners can compete in a Santa Paws competition for the best doggone holiday attire. Call (305) 664-4503.
Hot Pink Key West
What’s called Hot Pink Holidays is set for Dec. 2 to Dec. 4 in Key West. The LGBT holiday weekend sponsored by the Key West Business Guild is full of activities and special retail opportunities on the island. Events include a Conch Train holiday lights tour and caroling. Call (305) 294-4603.
The Key West holiday parade is set for Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
Local flavor prevails with marching bands, school groups and motorized and non-motorized floats. Catching the tossed candy is a highlight for kids. The route begins at Bayview Park and the best viewing spots are along Duval Street and Truman Avenue.
Lighted bike rides
Dec. 4, 7 and 10 bring lighted bike rides to Key Colony Beach (Dec. 4), Key West (Dec. 7) and Key Largo (Dec. 10).
The rides are held to benefit Wesley House Family Services, a family service organization, and its toy drive. Families and individuals decorate and light their bikes for the evening rides. Registration is one new unwrapped toy for the local Holiday Store organized by Holiday Helpers. Call (305) 809-5000.
Paws Steal Hearts
On Dec. 7 is the fifth Paws Often Steal Hearts, a party is to be held at the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens, 205 Whitehead St. in Key West, to benefit the Florida Keys SPCA, which provides animal control under a county contract from Key West through mile marker 70.
General admission tickets are $40 pre-purchased and $45 at the door per person. Call (305) 304-1232.
Pet Pictures with Santa, hosted by All Animal Clinic of Key West, are Dec. 9. Santa is to pose for photos with pets from 6 to 8 p.m. at the nautical Christmas tree at the foot of William Street on the Harbor Walk of Lights. Sales of photos, priced from $20, are to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Keys Area Inc.
