A new sports bar has opened in Key Largo at the location of a former popular eatery.
D-Hooker opened Monday, July 26 at 102250 Overseas Highway after an extensive remodeling. The restaurant is in the former location of Ganim’s Kountry Kitchen Restaurant, which moved to 102570 Overseas Hwy., sharing space with Rib Daddy’s Steak and Seafood restaurant.
A grand opening of D-Hooker is set for Saturday, August 7.
Owners Dennis and Betsy Duran recently moved to Key Largo from Miami with their sons, Jonathon and Jordan. Dennis said the family intends to be permanent Key Largo residents and committed to the plan by signing a 20-year lease for the restaurant. He also said the long-range plan is to open more locations in the Keys.
“This is our first restaurant, but we hope to grow and open more all the way down to Key West,” he said.
D-Hooker offers 14 brands of domestic and imported draft beers and a variety of bottled beers and wine by the glass.
“Right now it’s just beer and wine but hopefully by the end of the year we will be able to serve liquor,” Duran said.
The menu ranges from soup and salads to burgers, sandwiches, seafood, chicken wings and desserts. Burgers range in price from $6.95 for a half-pounder to $19.95 for the “man vs. burger,” which if completed earns the diner his or her name on a plaque. The one-pound “Big Mahi” sandwich, a D-Hooker specialty is $19.95. The D-Hooker sampler platter with chicken wings, calamari, cheese sticks, fried shrimp and stuffed jalapenos is also $19.95.
For the sports fan, D-Hooker has 12 high-definition big-screen TVs fed by DirecTV satellite with every available sports package.
“We set it up so every customer here has a good view from where they’re sitting,” Duran said. “We want everyone to have a good time. That’s what it’s all about.”
Duran said the aged and weathered wood used in the décor came from an unusual source.
“When we started putting this together I was looking for wood everywhere,” he said. “I own a property in Miami and this wood all came from my fence I had there. I took down my fence to get the look I wanted to achieve here.”
D-Hooker is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Happy hour is daily from 4 to 6 p.m.
