Police: Driving drunk, a corrections officer nearly ran over cop on Duval St.
A Monroe County corrections officer was jailed early Monday after police said he nearly ran over an officer on Key West’s Duval Street while drunk behind the wheel of his pickup.
Steven Jaroszewski, 25, who started at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in August 2015, was stopped by Key West police after first almost striking an officer on the street and then taking a left turn at a red traffic light, according to the arrest report.
“I've had enough,” Jaroszewski said after police asked if he had been drinking, the report states.
Officer Kristopher Bouiver said at about 3:30 a.m., while he was on Duval Street, a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup “passed by him so closely he had to place his lower extremities inside of his car to avoid being struck or ran over.”
Jaroszewski was stopped at the intersection of Eaton and William streets, where police said he smelled of booze, had bloodshot eyes, failed sobriety tests and refused the breath alcohol test unless he could have a lawyer present.
That’s not how it works, Officer Jesse Young told him but “he was entitled to counsel after the breath test was finished.”
When asked if he had any health problems, police said Jaroszewski asked if he could speak to them privately without the body worn camera running.
When told that wasn’t allowed, Jaroszewski told Young “he has been suffering from depression after moving 1,500 miles away from home in Connecticut where all his friends and family are,” police reported.
Police cited him for suspicion of driving under the influence and booked him into the same county jail on Stock Island where he works.
Jaroszewski was jailed at 5:40 a.m. Monday and released at 10:30 a.m. without having to post a bond. He is due in court Oct. 21 before Judge Wayne Miller.
The Sheriff’s Office, which pays Jaroszewski $43,911 a year, said Tuesday his job is “under review,” because of the arrest.
“Under review means his status has not yet been determined,” said Deputy Becky Herrin.
