A Miami Gardens woman was charged Friday with taking part in an Aug. 12 robbery at an Islamorada jewelry store.
Laritza M. Jimenez Vasquez, 19, was taken into custody on a felony count of robbery in the theft of a $13,000 Rolex watch from Blue Marlin Jewelry.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Yunier Galvez concluded that Jimenez Vasquez made several "false statements" in her changing accounts of the crime.
Ronald H. Cordero, 22, of Hialeah was arrested Aug. 12 after deputies stopped a car that sped away from the store at mile marker 82. The watch was recovered from inside the car. Jimenez Vasquez and two other passengers were released after giving statements.
Cordero remains jailed under an $80,000 bond, accused of grabbing the men's watch from the hand of a female store clerk who was showing it to Jimenez Vasquez.
Jimenez Vasquez reportedly first told deputies their car did not stop at the store on a return trip from Key West. After further questioning, she admitted going inside the store with Cordero but said she was "looking around" and was surprised when Cordero grabbed the watch.
Cordero threw the watch from a car window, she told deputies.
The store clerk said it was a talkative Jimenez Vasquez who asked to see the pricey watch as a potential gift. The clerk told Galvez that she suspected Jimenez "was distracting her so [Cordero] could steal the watch."
The detective said the watch was recovered from a seat pocket of the car, which was "directly in front of where Jimenez was sitting, making it impossible for her not to know the watch was there."
Jimenez Vasquez was released Saturday after posting $25,000 bond.
