A 62-4 win Monday night for the Marathon High Lady Fins hoops team against district foe Miami Community Charter High School brings their record to 2-0.
“We were a little concerned about being flat with Thanksgiving week, but both boys and girls teams came out last night really fired up and focused,” said Charlie Brown, Lady Fins coach.
Marathon was up 20-0 after three minutes.
“We kept running our fast break and that’s what got us our points,” Brown said. “The big difference stat wise is we had 33 missed layups in the first game. Last night, we missed 13.”
Everyone had a chance to play Freshman Leta Ricart scored 30 points in 14 minutes, had 10 assists and six steals. Deyli Labrada scored nine points and is the team’s three-point specialist, Brown said.
The Lady Fins ended the half at 37-2, after which the clock ran out during the second half as required by the Florida High School Athletic Association when a team is 35 points ahead. Twenty-five points in the second half contributed to the Lady Fins’ win.
“I’m really excited about the culture of the team. Sometimes that’s very hard to find with a young team and I think they’re understanding their roles,” Brown said.
Marathon was to host Island Christian School at home Tuesday night in a game too late for press time. They will play again at home Saturday against the Palmer Trinity School Falcons at 1 p.m.
