Scott Morgan Rhodes, surfer, photographer, scuba diver, passed away on Friday, April 21, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. after a long battle with medullary thyroid cancer.

It turns out, however, that rebreathers have been around longer than better known open circuit scuba gear. Henry A. Fleuss submitted a patent in 1878 and the rebreather was used two years later to close some crucial valves in the Severn River.

The yellowtail snapper bite in 80-130 feet continues to be great from Marathon to Ocean Reef, with almost every boat catching lots of tails and a few flags every trip. In addition to the yellowtails have been a few nice mutton snappers up to 15 pounds caught on live baits fished on the bottom.

The quest to honor the memory of Matthew shared by his father, Tom Conway of Sanford, Fla., his sister Brieanne Conway of Islamorada, and numerous friends has led to Matthew’s ashes and memory being spread as far as the South Pacific, and bodies of water in Florida Arizona, California and even a lake in North Dakota.

The week-long sessions will introduce campers to the basics of sailing, boat handling and seamanship, and when winds are light, kids will enjoy tubing, nearshore kayaking, snorkeling and visits to nearby islands located in or near Everglades National Park.
