The Rolling Stones announce 2020 tour dates and return to the scene of ‘Satisfaction’
The Rolling Stones’ No Filter Tour shows no signs of flickering out — even if Mick Jagger’s heart and Hurricane Dorian did their best to derail the classic rock group’s tour twice last year at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium.
But Mick and the boys are still “Dancing With Mr. D” — thankfully, not Dorian — and have announced a new leg of North American summer 2020 dates for the No Filter Tour.
And there’s one Florida date — July 5 in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium, site of next year’s Super Bowl.
The 2020 No Filter tour opens May 8 in San Diego and aims toward some markets the band hasn’t played in more than a decade, such as Tampa, Vancouver, Austin, Louisville, Cleveland, St. Louis and Charlotte, Variety reported.
Aside from Tampa, the closest stops to Florida are dates in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 1, and the closing date at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on July 9, according to AEG Presents.
The Stones last played Tampa in 2005. But several teases on fan sites and a banner featuring the group’s famous tongue logo started flapping at Raymond James Stadium days before the announcement, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
Rolling Stones’ Florida history
According to legend, Keith Richards first came up with the distinctive guitar riff that powers “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” while in nearby Clearwater at Jack Russell Stadium in 1965, the Times reported.
“It’s always a pleasure to return to North America and play for some of biggest and best crowds in the world!” Jagger said in a statement released by AEG Presents.
Richards must not have been thinking of the South Florida experience last year when he added: “We had the best time on the road last summer and we are ready to do it again!”
The Stones’ No Filter Tour won Best Rock Tour at Thursday’s 31st annual Pollstar Awards in Los Angeles.
Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which added dates for May at Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena, Tampa’s Amalie Arena and Orlando’s Amway Center, won Major Tour of the Year — beating the Stones in the same category.
“I’m very competitive so I want to win the f-----g thing next year as well,” John said in his acceptance speech.
The challenge is on.
Tickets and concert information
Stones tickets for the general public go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, through Ticketmaster. This includes the concert at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium on July 5.
Pre-sale for American Express card members begins 10 a.m. Feb. 12 — but these pre-sales don’t guarantee the best seats so you may still get some “Satisfaction” if you’re clutching a Visa or Mastercard.
These pre-sale tickets were starting at $97 for the Tampa show.
