Films capture Keys fishing history

The Historical Preservation Society's July 8 meeting will feature two film clips showcasing the Keys early fishing history.



Capt. George Hommell, founder of World Wide Sportsman, arrived in the Keys in 1945 and began guiding in 1951. Originally from the Catskill Mountains of New York, Hommell continued to guide until the business got too big and he began spending more time with the store.

Also on tap for this month's program, a silent DVD of Walter Stark tarpon fishing with a group of men at Little Bahia Honda Key.

During the film, viewers will see a train going south on the Bahia Honda Bridge.

The program, which starts at 7 p.m., is free and held at the Key Largo Library Community Room, mile marker 101.4 in Tradewinds Plaza Shopping Center.
