Dive death was at least the sixth dive or snorkel death in the Keys this year

The death of a 65-year-old Texas man who died Thursday while scuba diving was at least the sixth dive or snorkel death in the Keys this year.

Dallas resident Arne Berg had just surfaced from a dive on the wreck of the Spiegel Grove about six miles Key Largo, says the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The wreck is a retired 510-foot former military ship that was scuttled in 2002.

Deputy Becky Herrin said witnesses related that Berg was unresponsive when he surfaced from the morning dive. He was brought aboard the dive boat, operated by Rainbow Reef Dive Center, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered as the boat returned to shore. Paramedics met the boat in the Port Largo subdivision and took Berg Mariners Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before noon.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

The deadliest day on the water in the Keys this year was on March 23, when three people died while snorkeling in separate incidents, two off Key West and one off Key Largo. They were from San Antonio, Texas; Schauwburg, Ill.; and Wood River, Ill.
