Monroe County Sheriff's Office detectives wearing protective coveralls stand in the Cuba Road yard of a Tavernier couple found shot to death Friday afternoon.

Three young children spent Thursday night alone in their Tavernier house with the bodies of their mother and her boyfriend, who were shot to death some time during the night.

They spent the better part of Friday with the bodies before a neighbor noticed the children in their yard around 2 p.m. The children are ages 3, 4 and 8.

The children told the neighbor the adults were in the house, dead, said Deputy Becky Herrin, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office's spokeswoman.

The neighbor went next door and found Tara Rosado, 26, and Carlos Ortiz, 30, shot to death. He called the Sheriff's Office, and deputies arrived at the Cuba Road home, near Harry Harris Park, shortly thereafter.

The Sheriff's Office confirmed the case is not a murder-suicide, indicating a double-murder suspect is on the loose.
