Death toll in Florida Keys crashes reaches 17 for the year

The toll of traffic fatalities in the Keys for 2015 hit 17 when a couple from the United Kingdom died in a motorcycle crash at U.S. 1 and the Sadowski Causeway leading into Key Colony Beach just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Terence Milsom, 57, and Dawn Marie Milsom, 50, were killed when the rented 2006 Harley Davidson Terence Milsom was operating was struck by a 2000 Ford Excursion driven by Carla Elizondo, 53, of Hobe Sound.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Milsom was riding south at mile marker 53 and Elizondo, with Antoinette Thomassy, 40, of DuBois, Pa., as a passenger in the SUV, was traveling north. Milsom attempted to make a left turn onto the causeway from U.S. 1 when Elizondo hit the motorcycle.

No charges were filed. The FHP says it has handled 11 crashes this year with a combined 14 fatalities.

Key West had three fatalities this year, one in which a woman was killed while walking on South Roosevelt Boulevard when a car jumped the curb (the driver is charged with negligent homicide), another on North Roosevelt Boulevard in which a motorcyclist died and another when a Texas man riding a scooter crashed in Old Town.

Friday, what appeared to be an extra crew of state troopers headed south to Key West, presumably for duty during Fantasy Fest.
