Sheriff's Office staffer arrested, fired after fight with wife

A security tech with the Monroe Sheriff's Office was arrested for domestic battery Monday and promptly fired.

William Stabenow, 44, was reportedly at Coconut's Bar on Big Pine Key early in the morning. His wife and son told Deputy Matthew Dowling they went to the bar in an effort to get him to come home but as they attempting to put him into a car, he attacked his wife, says agency spokeswoman Becky Herrin.

He reportedly threw her to the ground and pounded her head on the concrete. During the fight, one of her hands and a wrist were injured.

Stabenow was arrested at his home on Little Torch Key and booked into jail. He was then fired; he had been a probationary employee with the Sheriff's Office.

Herrin said he was hired in February 2012 as an airport security technician, a civilian position. He attended an academy to become a jail officer this past January "but failed in his attempt to become a corrections officer," Herrin said.

He resigned but was rehired. At the time of his arrest his salary was $37,559.
