An Upper Keys crash about 10:05 a.m. Monday involved 10 Monroe County Detention Center inmates, one of whom needed medical treatment.
Troopers say that Sheriff's Office Deputy Zachary Gilroy, 23, of Key West was transporting the inmates from the Key West jail to the Plantation Key jail in a 2008 Bluebird bus and was northbound on U.S. 1 in the center turn lane at mile marker 88. Gilroy had started turning left onto High Point Road.
Adam Symonds, 28, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler south. Gilroy veered into the Wrangler's path and Symonds tried to avoid a crash but struck the right side of the van.
Symonds and six inmates were taken to Mariners Hospital for evaluation. The inmates who were on the bus are John Daniel Serrano, John Lee Hayes, Daniel Jeffrey Albury, Geary Stephen Lane, Sandra Lee Hackmeier, Alexander Marcus Acs, Guillermo Lopez, John Thomas Merendino, Adrian Rodriguez and Shemar Kentrell Fantroy.
Lane was later taken to Kendall Regional Hospital with none life-threatening injuries.
