Kite surfer seriously injured in the Florida Keys

A person was seriously injured while kite surfing off the Upper Florida Keys Monday afternoon.

Initial reports indicate the person was bleeding from the head and may have been unconscious, said Adam Linhardt, spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The county’s TraumaStar helicopter air ambulance landed at Island Christian School, mile marker 83.4 in Islamorada, to take the patient to a Miami-Dade County hospital for treatment, according to a 3:30 p.m. sheriff’s office statement.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the incident, Linhardt said.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
