One person is dead after a small plane crashed in Marathon, police said

The pilot of a single-engine ultralight plane was killed Thursday evening when the aircraft lost control and crashed into a vacant house in Marathon, police said.

“No one on the ground was injured,” said Adam Linahrdt, spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The pilot, who was the only one aboard, was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:11 p.m. but was not identified due to being badly burned, according to the crash report by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The plane crashed into a home at 1053 76th Street at about 5:10 p.m. and the impact caused a small fire that was put out within minutes, according to the sheriff’s office and the Florida Highway Patrol.

A parachute was found near the crash site.

The primary investigators are the FHP and the National Transportation Safety Board.
