Are beds available at your neighborhood hospital? This Florida interactive map can help
How crowded is the hospital you want to go to?
Does it have a bed for you or for a friend or family member? How many ICU beds and how many regular beds are occupied?
An interactive map with data from HealthData.Gov tracks Florida hospitals’ occupancy rates.
Sometimes you have to go for a procedure. And if you have the choice of hospital — for instance, your doctor isn’t affiliated at just one or it’s not an emergency — you may want to know how busy a particular Florida facility is in deciding where to go.
For instance, should you go to West Kendall Baptist Hospital or Baptist Hospital of Miami? Both are within 10 miles of one another. But both can reveal different occupancy rates, with one busier than the other.
There are only three major hospitals stretched across the Florida Keys’ island chain — Lower Keys Medical Center, Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Mariners Hospital so, not surprisingly, the beds often tend to be at or near capacity.
To use the interactive chart, hover over the dots and this is what will pop up: a hospital name with details on its ICU Occupancy (for intensive care unit) and Total Occupancy as percentages. The data also lists Total Available Beds and Total ICU Beds.
The figures are seven-day averages and regularly updated to the previous day. So, for example, if you use the chart on Sept. 13, you will see a header reading: “7-day average from the week of September 2. Last Updated September 12, 2022.”
