This story was updated to report that on Friday, May 5, 2023, the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office opted not to pursue the charges against Rory Peter Stien and Stephen George Yetman.

The Monroe County State Attorney’s Office on Friday dropped charges against two men accused by sheriff’s deputies of stealing a car they rented from a Florida Keys impound lot after it was towed last month.

Assistant State Attorney Carter Reeves wrote in the “Memorandum of No Action” that the men paid restitution to the owner of the lot, and he “does not wish to seek any further punitive measures.”

Sheriff’s office deputies said Rory Peter Stien, 32, from Australia, and Stephen George Yetman, 36, from Boston, broke into the Stock Island impound lot on April 25 to steal a car they rented that was towed from a Key West business earlier that day.

They were arrested after deputies pulled them over on U.S. 1 in the Middle Keys city of Marathon about 40 miles north of the lot, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said the men rented the car and it was towed from a business where it was not permitted to be parked.

Deputies say they caused $5,000 in damage to the gate. The break-in was captured on the lot’s security camera, Linhardt said.

When deputies pulled them over, Stien and Yetman were wearing the same clothes as the men shown on the footage entering the lot, according to the sheriff’s office.
