A Key West man was jailed this week after police say he punched his pregnant 18-year-old girlfriend in the stomach during an argument while he was driving her car.

Robert Struckus, 24, on Friday remained stuck in the county jail on Stock Island on $25,000 bond. He faces a felony charge of aggravated battery when the offender knows the victim is pregnant.

Struckus left a red mark about three inches above her navel, according to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies who responded to the call at the couple’s home late Thursday at the Santa Clara Condominiums, 3312 Northside Drive.

Trouble began for the couple when they were riding around Stock Island on Thursday and got into an argument, which escalated when Struckus yanked the keys out of the ignition while it was running and in drive, his girlfriend told police.

While at a stop sign at 10th Avenue and 5th Street, Struckus allegedly punched her in the stomach, which she said left her in pain, the arrest report states. He got out and took off on a bike while his girlfriend and her sister called a tow truck due to the ignition damage.

“She stated Robert had a history of hitting her and she was afraid to make a report because she was scared of what he would to to her,” wrote Deputy Aaron Roddy. The two live together and are having a child together, the girlfriend added.

Struckus wouldn’t speak to the arresting officers, who said that once inside the patrol car he began banging his head against the glass partition and said he would try to kill himself, according to the arrest report.

The pregnant teen refused medical treatment, saying a hospital visit would take too long. “She was tired and wanted to go to bed,” deputies said.
