Visitor hurt in PWC crash in Key West Harbor

A Pennsylvania woman suffered injuries Sunday after a crash between two personal watercraft on a sightseeing tour from Key West.

Amanda Shaffer was riding with husband Seth through Key West Harbor when their jet-powered vessel was in a collision with another PWC that was part of the tour from Fury Water Adventures.

Konaki Subbarayudu, a Virginia resident operating the second craft, was ticketed for careless operation by Officer John Martino of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Key West responded to an emergency call of two people thrown into the water after the accident, around 10:15 a.m. near Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. One of the riders suffered “a possible ribcage injury,” according to a Coast Guard summary.

Amanda Shaffer was taken to the Coast Guard station, where she was met by an ambulance for transport to Lower Keys Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition at last report. The other riders escaped serious injury.
