A Florida Keys man was arrested on an animal-abuse charge after witnesses told investigators they saw him slam his Great Dane on the deck of the boat he lives on by violently yanking the dog’s choke-chain collar, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The two witnesses reported the alleged Dec. 30 incident to Animal Control officers, who watched security-camera footage, which corroborated their statements, said sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt.

The 135-pound dog landed on its back on the deck of the boat, which is docked at the Stock Island Yacht Club near Key West, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for 54-year-old Jack Edward Grewer, who lives on the boat, Linhardt said. Grewer was arrested Friday and booked into a county jail on Stock Island on one count of misdemeanor animal abuse.

Information about his bond and legal representation was not immediately available.
