Homicide suspects scheduled for trials

Peter Erik Hedvall, accused of first-degree murder in the 2011 killing of a man during Fantasy Fest in Key West, is scheduled for trial beginning on March 17.

Hedvall, 28, is accused of killing Jonathon Alvarado, a former server at La Trattoria Beachside who was 32 when he died, on Oct. 28 that year.

Attorneys for both sides met briefly in front of Monroe County Judge Wayne Miller on Thursday at the Freeman Justice Center in Key West for a hearing. The day before, Miller signed a gag order in the case.

Alvarado was found dead under a truck at 1019 Grinnell St., down the block from Don's Million Dollar Bar. The cause of death was blunt-force trauma caused by a rock found lying next to the truck, according to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police reports say witnesses at Don's that night saw Alvarado wearing angel wings -- which were used to strangle him, according to reports -- and Hedvall was seen in a light-colored suit; both were costumes for the annual 10-day Fantasy Fest bacchanal.

Hedvall, of Brighton, Mass., was questioned the night of the slaying and police collected a seersucker suit that later tests showed had drops of Alvarado's blood on it. In the meantime, Hedvall took off to Waukesha, Wis., where he was arrested on Dec. 21, 2011, and extradited back to the Keys.

Following recent hearings contesting whether the DNA was collected in a proper search and is therefore admissible, Miller ruled the evidence could be used in trial by prosecuting Assistant State Attorney Val Winter.

Hedvall, a former bouncer at Irish Kevin's bar and the Bare Assets strip club, is represented by Alan Fowler.

Randleman shooting death

Thursday, Miller set a tentative May 12 trial date for two men accused of shooting to death 18-year-old Big Pine Key resident Frank Randleman on May 22, 2010, although Winter said the case "might not be ready" by then.

William Dieguez, 25, and Sean Roberts, 20, both of Marathon, are charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Randleman in his grandmother's home in the Seahorse RV Park during an apparent drug-related robbery.
