Upper Keys inmate charged with escape

A Key West man in jail on four felony counts got another one added for trying to escape from the Plantation Key detention center.

Justin Jacobs, 33, whom jail records show is a homeless Key West man, jumped on a table in the recreation yard at the jail on April 15 and tried to unwind parts of a metal fence near the ceiling, says the Monroe County Sheriff's Office

He jumped off the table when a corrections deputy walked into the room, but a check of the fence revealed he created an opening in the fence, which was later repaired.

Jacobs is charged with escape. He had been in jail on a March 3 count of grand theft and March 25 counts of grand theft and two of burglary, all out of Key West. He's had other charges in the past, including sale of cocaine.

He's being held on $116,000 bond, though that doesn’t factor in the new charge. So bail likely will be changed to no bond allow.
