The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for a man who attacked a 22-year-old woman jogging in Marathon at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
She told detectives that she was on the bike path on Knight's Key and heading toward the old Seven Mile Bridge when a man grabbed her from behind, says the Sheriff's Office. She told detectives that she screamed for help and escaped, hiding in nearby bushes.
Once it was light out, she approached another jogger who helped her call the Sheriff's Office.
Detectives said the woman sustained minor injuries. Detectives believe the attacker may be a white man about 5 foot 9 with a thin build. He wore a long-sleeve shirt and covered his face during the attack.
"This is a very unusual crime for our county. Attacks like this one don't happen often here," Sheriff Rick Ramsay said. "We want to urge anyone who knows anything about this crime to come forward as soon as possible. We have a safe community and we would like to keep it that way by catching this man and putting him in jail."
Anyone with information about the attack should contact the Sheriff's Office at (305) 289-2430. Callers may also contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys at (800) 346-TIPS. Tipsters can remain anonymous and, if a tip leads to an arrest in the case, the caller would be eligible for a cash reward.
