Deputies are looking for a Key Largo man wanted on an attempted murder charge after allegedly bashing his mother’s boyfriend over the head with a glass ashtray while the man slept.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office detectives say Adrian Rodriguez attacked his mother’s live-in boyfriend, Daniel Rivero, 47, on May 12 while Rivero slept inside their mile marker 103 home in Key Largo.
Rivero told police that the attack was over $550 in rent owed to him by Rodriguez and his mother.
Rodriguez allegedly broke Rivero’s cell phone, as well as his mother’s phone, before leaving the house.
He drove north to Miami. As he was heading north, he called 911 and reached a Miami-Dade dispatcher, reporting that someone at his house was bleeding from the head. He gave the dispatcher the address, but hung up the phone before the dispatcher could get more information.
Sheriff’s Office deputies and medics were sent to Rivero’s home. When they got there, they found Rivero with a serious head injury. He was taken to Mariners Hospital and then flown to Kendall Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Detectives spoke with Rodriguez on May 13. He told them he called 911, but denied hitting Rivero.
Detectives said they discovered “many inconsistencies” between “the story the suspect told and the evidence found at the scene.” They have not been able to find Rodriguez since that day.
Doctors told Sheriff’s Office detectives that Rivero suffered a fractured skull and swollen brain. His injuries could have been fatal if not treated.
