Cops on the lookout for reckless driver, end up with boat-burglary suspect

A Big Coppitt Key man was jailed Sunday afternoon, charged with burglarizing a boat and a home on Sirius Lane on Big Coppitt Key.

Alexandro Colon, 21, is charged with burglary of a vehicle, burglary of a residence, grand theft and criminal mischief. He remained jailed on $50,000 bond Tuesday.

Herrin said Sgt. Linda Mixon was patrolling Big Pine Key when she was dispatched to intercept a reported reckless driver northbound at mile marker 21. The driver of the vehicle, a blue 2002 Jeep, may have been involved in a burglary on Big Coppitt, she was told.

The person who reported the burglary said he saw Colon steal several rods and reels from his neighbor's boat and then use a hammer to break a window on his neighbor's house and go inside. No one was in there.

Mixon stopped the Jeep at mile marker 28 of U.S. 1. The stolen fishing poles were in the Jeep, Herrin said, so Colon was arrested.
