Target recalls baby wipes after FDA testing finds potentially deadly bacteria

Two types of store brand baby wipes have been recalled by Target after FDA testing found bacteria that “may result in serious and life-threatening infections.”

Target’s recall notice says customers have contacted Target and wipes manufacturer Sapro Temizlik Urunleri — ”Turkey’s largest wet wipes exporter” according to its website — with reports of “product discoloration and symptoms such as skin irritation, eye irritation, and infections potentially associated with the use of the product.”

The recall notice, also posted to the FDA website, says FDA testing found Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria and Burkholderia gladioli in product samples and using those products might have deadly consequences.

“The products are predominantly used on newborns, infants, and young children, who are particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infection due to their immature immune systems,” the recall notice explained. “In healthy individuals, use of the product on skin with minor lesions will more likely result in local infections, whereas in immunocompromised individuals, newborns, infants and young children, the infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia.”
