Publix fruit recalled after 12 customers got E. coli-linked stomach illnesses

Frozen fruit sold under Publix’s GreenWise brand has been recalled in Florida and seven other states out of fears it might be contaminated with a deadly form of E. coli.

Chilean company Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. recalled only lot No. 60401 of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, which had a best by date of Feb. 9, 2028, and came in 10-ounce bags.

But the recall notice posted to Publix’s website said, “Publix is advising customers return or discard any frozen GreenWise blueberries products with a purchase date of Friday, July 3, 2026, or before.”

The E. coli strain is O145:H28, one of the Shiga-toxin producing forms of E. coli. While that means bloody diarrhea, vomiting and agonizing stomachaches for most people, Shiga-toxin forms of E. coli are the most likely to cause hemolytic uremic syndrome or HUS, the kidney failure that can make E. coli deadly.

“There have been reports of 12 confirmed cases of consumers experiencing stomach illness between May 11, 2026, and Jun. 5, 2026, linked with E. coli O145:H28 infections,” the recall notice said. “After receiving reports of consumers experiencing digestive illnesses and having consumed GreenWise frozen blueberries as part of their diet, Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. has decided to initiate the recall.”

Return recalled blueberries to the store where you bought them for a full refund. If you have questions about this recall, email Info.foodsafety@comfrut.com or call 336-899-5612, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
