Furloughed abuse shelter director needs more support in wake of takeover

I was shocked and saddened when I read about the recent decisions regarding the Monroe County Domestic Abuse Shelter. As a former member of the DAS board for several years, I was always impressed with the leadership given by the director, Venita Garvin. For 18 years, she has steadfastly led the group.

When I read that it was being taken over by an outside group, I assumed that didn't mean that Venita would be replaced but evidently I was wrong. Venita has often loaned the shelter money from her own account until funds became available.

Even though I haven't been involved for a few years, this is one of the organizations that I feel makes a real difference. To treat a long-time employee in this manner is simply reprehensible. I hope others will make their feelings known to the DAS board and personally show Venita that the community holds her in the highest regard.
