Key Largo shooting victim airlifted to Miami hospital Thursday night

An “altercation” Thursday between two Alabama men apparently in the Keys to help with hurricane recovery ended with one man shot twice and airlifted to a Miami trauma center. No one was charged.

Here’s what happened, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office:

Michael Sproul, 48, and the Jerome Gant, 53, got into a confrontation during the day. Sproul pulled a knife, threatened Gant and hit him in the face.

They continued working and when they were done, Sproul reportedly followed Gant to the trailer they were staying in at 825 Largo Road in Key Largo and threatened Gant again around 7:30 p.m. At that point, Gant armed himself with another man’s gun.

Just before 7:30 p.m. Sproul confronted Gant again, this time armed with a pellet gun. He pointed it at Gant and, after Gant ordered Sproul to drop the gun, Gant shot Sproul twice because Sproul wouldn’t drop the gun. Sproul was later airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center.

Detective Bob Dosh responded and after interviewing everyone involved, including witnesses, all of whom told the same stories, Gant was not arrested. Detective Dosh will be continuing his investigation.
