Keys doctors get tested for COVID-19 while working on the front lines of the pandemic
Two Florida Keys doctors took turns being tested for the novel coronavirus on video Thursday.
The idea belonged to Dr. Jack Norris, who asked Dr. Bruce Boros to get tested for everyone to see. Noting that the doctors are “chasing and hunting” the coronavirus in homes, offices and the hospital, Norris said, “We’re going to show you how we make sure that we’re not bringing anything in with us.”
Both have become public faces of the healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic in Monroe County.
Boros, a cardiologist, runs Advanced Urgent Care, which has locations in Key Largo and Key West, while Norris is in private practice and is chief of staff at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island.
Both have been posting video updates on COVID-19 in the Keys on their personal Facebook pages, as they have regularly tested people who show symptoms of the deadly virus.
Their own tests, videotaped by Louie C. Rock of Key West, are posted on Facebook and YouTube. Norris said Sunday his results were negative for COVID-19. Boros hadn’t reported his yet.
“I’m going to have myself tested in front of everybody,” Norris said before the test Thursday evening. “Sooner or later, I’m going to catch this bug. My wife knows it. My family knows it.“
Norris said he is confident Key West residents are doing all they can to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“This community has stood up,” Norris said. “I love this town.”
As of Friday morning, the Keys had 55 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 26 in Key West. The age range is 14 to 80. Monroe County has reported three deaths and seven hospitalizations.
