Florida nears 19,000 cases and more than 450 deaths, health officials say
As Florida nears 19,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 450 deaths, South Florida continues to account for more than half of the state’s cases and deaths, according to the state Department of Health’s Saturday evening report.
As of Saturday evening, the state’s total cases are at 18,986 and 458 deaths. Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties make up 11,160 of those confirmed COVID-19 cases and 252 deaths.
Since Friday evening the state has seen an increase of 1,018 cases and 39 new deaths. Of the new deaths, 14 were in South Florida.
▪ Ten people in Miami-Dade County have died since Friday night: including nine men between the ages of 40 and 81. The death of a 76-year-old person whose gender is unknown was also reported by health officials.
▪ Four people in Broward County have died since Friday night, which includes two women and two men between the ages of 58 and 96.
▪ One new death was reported in Palm Beach County since Friday night, a 71-year-old man.
The 25 other deaths were recorded in Brevard, Collier, Duval, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Orange, Palm Beach, Sarasota and Volusia counties.
Of the total confirmed cases statewide, 18,445 are Florida residents and 541 are nonresidents who were diagnosed or isolated in the state. As of Saturday morning, there have been 2,528 hospitalizations in the state.
CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES IN SOUTH FLORIDA
As of Saturday evening, here’s what Florida’s Department of Health data show:
▪ Miami-Dade, which has the most deaths in the state, added 271 cases and two deaths, putting it at 6,758 and 94, respectively. Those who got sick from the coronavirus range from 0 to 103 (zero means the child is less than 1 year old) with a median age of 49. There have been 530 hospitalizations.
▪ Broward saw another 38 cases and no new deaths, raising the county total to 2,844 cases and the death toll remains at 76. Those who have fallen ill range from 0 to 98 with a median age of 50. There have been 430 hospitalizations.
▪ Monroe County added one new case, putting the Florida Keys’ total at 59 cases and three deaths. Those who have fallen ill range from 14 to 80 with a median age of 52. Seven of those affected were hospitalized.
▪ Palm Beach reported 58 more cases and no new deaths to reach 1,499 and 80, respectively. Those who have fallen ill range from 0 to 104 with a median age of 58. There have been 263 hospitalizations.
